Driving while pregnant — what no one tells you

Your Seatbelt Was Built to Save You — Not Your Bump.

Australian crash data shows 87.7% of pregnant women have never been shown how to position their seatbelt — and the wrong placement quietly puts baby at risk on every drive.

Lap belt across the bump multiplies crash force 01

Lap Belt Across the Bump Multiplies Force

In a sudden brake or crash, your seatbelt becomes a hard line of force. When that line sits over the bump instead of below it, impact transfers directly to your uterus and placenta — not absorbed by your pelvic bones as designed.

Placental abruption can happen at low speeds 02

Abruption Can Happen at City Speeds

It's not only high-speed crashes. Placental abruption — the leading cause of fetal loss after a car incident — can occur from blunt force across the abdomen even at low speeds. Correct lap-belt position meaningfully reduces this risk.

Most Australian mums were never shown the right seatbelt position 03

Most Aussie Mums Were Never Shown the Right Way

Of 1,491 pregnant women surveyed, only 41.4% wore the belt correctly — and 87.7% had never been taught. It isn't negligence; it's silence around what should be a basic pregnancy safety conversation.

“The school run was getting so uncomfortable around 30 weeks — the belt kept digging into my bump. This took three minutes to fit and now it sits right under, exactly where my midwife said it should. I honestly forget it’s there.”

“I bought two — one for my car and one for my husband’s. Setup was genuinely easy, no fiddling with the seatbelt itself. Driving feels so much calmer now, especially on the motorway. Wish I’d found it in my first trimester.”

“My obstetrician actually recommended a belt positioner, so I was thrilled this one looked so well made. It keeps the lap belt low and off the bump on every drive. The peace of mind through the third trimester is worth every dollar.”

“We drive out to my parents’ farm most weekends and three hours in the car was really wearing me out. Having the belt sit under the bump instead of across it made the biggest difference — I actually arrive comfortable now.”

“You can tell it’s properly made — the strap is sturdy and the clip feels really secure, nothing flimsy about it. I expected far less for the price. I’ve already recommended it to two pregnant friends.”

“I’m on the road for work most days, and having the seatbelt sit across my bump was a constant worry. It keeps the belt low and out of the way — I honestly feel calm behind the wheel again.”

Your Questions, Answered

Everything AU mums ask before their first drive.

Is this compliant with Australian Design Rules (ADR)?+
Yes. The Relievoo Safety Belt is an accessory that works with your car's existing 3-point seatbelt — it doesn't replace, modify or interfere with the belt's anchorage points. Your factory seatbelt remains fully ADR-compliant and crash-tested. The adjuster simply repositions the lap portion to sit safely under your bump.
Will this affect my NRMA/RACV/AAMI insurance?+
No. Because the belt doesn't modify your car or your factory seatbelt, it has no impact on your comprehensive cover with NRMA, RACV, AAMI, Allianz, Budget Direct or Youi. Your airbags and seatbelt pretensioners function exactly as the manufacturer intended. We've yet to hear of a single Australian insurer raising an issue.
Is it safe to use in the third trimester / late pregnancy?+
Absolutely — third trimester is when most mums find it most helpful. As your bump grows, the lap belt naturally wants to ride up onto your stomach, which is the opposite of where it should sit. The adjuster keeps the lap portion low across your pelvis right through to 40+ weeks.
Can I use it for a twin pregnancy?+
Yes. Twin and multiple pregnancies often show earlier and larger, so many of our customers carrying twins start using the belt from around 20 weeks. Always check with your obstetrician or MFM specialist, but the design accommodates a wide range of bump sizes through its adjustable strap.
Does it work in all cars including SUVs and utes?+
Yes. It's been tested across Australian favourites including Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, Tesla Model Y and most sedans. As long as your car has a standard 3-point lap-and-sash seatbelt, the adjuster fits.
How is it different from a regular seatbelt cover?+
Seatbelt covers only add padding — they don't change where the belt sits. The Relievoo adjuster physically anchors the lap portion below your bump using a strap that loops under the seat, so the force of any sudden stop is directed into your pelvis rather than your belly.
Can I use it after a c-section?+
Yes, and many mums find it especially helpful in the first 6 weeks postpartum. The adjuster keeps the lap belt away from your incision site, which makes the drive home from hospital and the early follow-up appointments much more comfortable. Always follow your surgeon's advice on when to resume driving.
What's your return policy if it doesn't fit my car?+
We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee with free Australian returns and a full refund — no fine print. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law are protected on top of that. If it doesn't work for your car or your bump, just send it back and we'll refund you in full.
